Have you ever seen a perfect tree or a perfect hand? The ancient Greeks believed that every physical object we use or encounter — including hands — had an ideal version existing somewhere in the cosmos. My sculptures and paintings play at the boundary between the real and the ideal, using geometric shapes and bodies to question how we make sense of how the world and our bodies are anything but perfect…
About the Artist:
Marina Claire constantly manipulates the physical: metal, paint, ink, and bodies. While their hands bend, heat, and brush, their mind hovers in geometries. Plato’s inquiries into the timeless perfection of imagined geometric shapes, and into how geometries might lie behind all nature, inspire them to make objects that (though necessarily imperfect because they will never have perfect straight edges, and must eventually erode) tease our minds toward the perfect. The objects they make ask viewers to drift within that gap between the non-physical, conceptual realm and our tangible, sensory experience.
